The project on the Waitonga Falls Track that the Keir Projects team completed was commissioned by the Department of Conservation (DOC). This track is a stunning walk to Tongariro National Park’s highest waterfall (39m).

The track takes you through a beautiful mountain beech and kaikawaka forest and offers impressive views of Ruapehu over the exposed tarns. The 3.9-km out-and-back trail is generally considered a moderately challenging route, and is popular area for birdwatchers and walkers alike. This project was right up our alley!
The Waitonga Falls Track project involved the supply and installation of various structures, showcasing our expertise in challenging environments. This included the removal and reconstruction of 300m of boardwalk, lifting and replacing the foundations of an existing bridge, and the reconstruction of a staircase anchored into rock.
The first phase of the project involved the removal and reconstruction of a 300m boardwalk. Our team meticulously dismantled the old structure and installed a new, durable boardwalk designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
This upgrade not only improves the safety and accessibility of the track but also enhances the overall experience for visitors. Our key staff members, Josh Ireland, Jed Keir, Vaughan Nilsson, Fergus Jones, Lucas Chatham, and Trent Frank, brought their expertise in planning logistics and timber structures to this part of the project.
One of the significant challenges was lifting and replacing the foundations of an existing bridge. Working at height and in a delicate natural environment, our team applied their skills in technical machine operation and working over water. The new foundations provide a stable and secure base, ensuring the bridge’s longevity and safety for all users.
The final phase involved reconstructing a staircase anchored into rock. Drilling into rock requires precision and experience, and our team excelled in this task. The new staircase is not only sturdier but also designed to withstand the test of time and environmental stresses. This part of the project highlighted our capabilities in drilling and casing, as well as our commitment to using sustainable and durable materials.
