Cathedral Cove Access Restoration

The brief was clear: to reinstate safe, long-lasting access to Cathedral Cove without compromising the fragile coastal environment. Keir Projects delivered this by constructing 18 metres of boxed inground stairs with a handrail, providing a safe descent for visitors returning to the site.

To allow access directly to the beach, an 8-metre staircase was installed and anchored into the rock foundations.

Designed for long-term resilience, it extends 1.2 metres below the sand to mitigate the risk of future erosion. Above the beach, 17 metres of boardwalk was constructed on a sloping section, stabilised by four Platypus ground anchors driven 4.5 metres into the hillside.

Each element was engineered with precision to ensure it could handle ongoing weather challenges while blending into the natural landscape.

Working in such a remote and environmentally sensitive location meant typical construction methods were off the table. With no direct vehicle access and steep terrain, all materials were flown in by helicopter — thanks to a key partnership with Rotor Works Whitianga. This not only reduced ground impact but enabled the team to work efficiently in tough conditions.

Weather, tides, and tight working spaces added to the complexity, but the Keir Projects team adapted to every challenge. Their problem-solving and site planning ensured the work was completed to the highest standard without compromising the surrounding environment.

From the outset, Keir Projects worked closely with Ngāti Hei and the Department of Conservation to ensure the project aligned with cultural values and environmental protection. This collaboration shaped decisions at every level, creating a result that honours the history and mana of the whenua while delivering practical, high-quality infrastructure.
