Keir Projects recently completed a series of unique and rewarding projects at Hamilton Zoo. We were tasked with the job of enhancing some of the animal habitats and visitor experiences across four key areas. From designing new platforms for the Sumatran tigers to building a spider monkey playground and upgrading visitor walkways, the work highlights our ability to deliver creative solutions in complex environments.

Each project combined functional design and environmental awareness – ensuring the upgrades served both the animals who call the zoo home and the people who visit to connect with them.
The spider monkey habitat has been fully enhanced with dynamic, rainforest-inspired elements that reflect the species’ natural environment and encourage natural behaviors.
The Keir Projects crew installed 14 structural poles, ranging from 3m to 8m, across uneven ground with multiple anchors. Four shelters were also added to provide protection from sun and rain as well as a great spot to hide.
Working around the existing habitat and animals made this a one-of-a-kind job and one we’re especially proud of. Every detail had to be carefully planned and safely installed, with minimal disruption to the monkeys’ space.
The Sumatran tiger habitat saw the addition of new elevated platforms designed for comfort, enrichment, and safety. These timber structures give the tigers a great view of their surroundings while also offering improved viewing opportunities for zoo visitors.
Thoughtful design and robust construction meant we could enhance the habitat without compromising safety – for the animals, staff, or the public.
The giraffe viewing area was upgraded to give visitors a better experience and a new perspective on these gentle giants. The improved platform is more accessible and inviting, supporting educational encounters and helping visitors feel more connected to the animals.
A key feature at the Hamilton Zoo, the Waikato Wetlands Walkway underwent structural improvements. This included bridge renewal and re-piling, all completed with care to avoid disrupting the surrounding habitat.
The work ensures this popular path remains safe, stable, and ready to handle plenty more foot traffic from families and school groups in the years to come.
Working inside a zoo brings its own set of challenges – live animals, limited access, and the need to protect sensitive environments. But it also brings big rewards. Every project we delivered here helps improve animal welfare, conservation efforts, and the way people experience the zoo.
From anchoring poles into tricky ground conditions to renewing bridges around wetland areas, each build required a collaborative, considered approach. We’re proud to support Hamilton Zoo in their mission to foster conservation through experience.
